Move a compatible Haltech Elite ECU from ESP firmware to NSP using this Paddock Tuning workflow. Identify the exact ECU model before downloading or selecting firmware.
Last reviewed: September 20, 2026
Before you begin
Save a backup of your current calibration in ESP before updating. Keep the engine off, maintain stable ECU power and USB communication, and follow all on-screen instructions. Haltech instructs users to disconnect the ignition system before firmware updates. Isolate ignition power safely for your installation without interrupting the ECU power needed for the update. If unsure, contact support before proceeding.
1. Which ECU and firmware do you have?
With ignition on, check the light on the front of the Elite ECU:
- Blue: Follow the ESP-to-NSP upgrade steps below.
- Green: The ECU is already on NSP. Download the current NSP software and connect using NSP; you do not need to repeat the conversion.
Get software from the official Haltech downloads page. Select NSP by its name rather than relying on its position on the page.
2. Open ESP and connect to the ECU
Download and install ESP from Haltech, connect your computer to the Elite ECU by USB, switch ECU power on and open ESP. If the ESP Online sign-in window appears, close it to continue with the local USB connection; an online account is not needed for this local connection.

Click the connection icon indicated below. Confirm ESP reports that the ECU is connected before continuing.

3. Check Tools for the NSP upgrade
Open Tools. If Update to NSP (or Update ECU for use with NSP Software) is available, select it and follow the prompts.
If it is not available, select Tools → Update Firmware and choose the latest ESP firmware for your exact ECU model. Once that update finishes, return to Tools → Update to NSP.
4. If you need to download ESP firmware manually
- Visit Haltech Downloads and locate ESP ECU Firmware.
- Download the package for your exact Elite model—for example, Elite 750, 1500 or 2500. Do not use a different model’s file.
- Unzip the downloaded package to a location you can find, such as your Desktop.
- Return to Tools → Update Firmware, browse to the extracted folder and select the firmware file requested by ESP.
- After the update finishes, check Tools → Update Firmware again for the latest supported ESP firmware. Then return to Tools → Update to NSP.
If ESP instead reports a missing ECU definition, follow Haltech’s manual firmware/definition instructions. Firmware and communication definition files serve different purposes; simply extracting a ZIP to the Desktop may not resolve a missing definition.
5. Complete the conversion and open NSP
Follow the upgrade prompts without disconnecting USB or interrupting ECU power. After the ESP-to-NSP conversion, the front light changes from blue to green. Open the current NSP software and connect to the ECU.
6. Update NSP firmware and verify the calibration
Once connected in NSP, update the ECU to the latest supported firmware offered for that model. Elite NSP 3.13.4 is the version reference supplied by Paddock Tuning for this guide. Firmware releases change; check the current NSP release rather than treating this number as permanently the latest. If the expected firmware is unavailable, download and install the current NSP package from Haltech, reconnect and check again.
Before attempting to start, review the calibration and installation-specific settings, including trigger configuration, ignition, fuel system, sensors and output assignments. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safely restoring ignition connections. Do not assume the engine is ready to start solely because the update completed.
Related products and troubleshooting
Already have a compatible Elite ECU? The software upgrade is not a reason by itself to replace your hardware. If you are planning a new installation or evaluating an upgrade, browse Haltech Nexus ECUs and kits at Paddock Tuning. Store search results may include accessories. Check engine compatibility, wiring, inputs, outputs and installation requirements before purchasing.
For an engine that cranks but will not start, see our Haltech no-start checklist, with links to air-temperature, coolant-temperature and fuel-pressure sensor ranges.
Common ESP-to-NSP update questions
Why is Update to NSP missing from the Tools menu?
The ECU may need the latest supported ESP firmware for its exact model before the NSP conversion option appears. Use Tools → Update Firmware, complete that update, then return to Tools → Update to NSP.
What does the blue or green light on a Haltech Elite ECU mean?
For this upgrade workflow, a blue front light indicates the ECU is still using ESP firmware. A green front light indicates the ECU has been converted for use with NSP.
What if NSP does not offer the expected Elite firmware?
Install the current NSP package from Haltech, reconnect the ECU and check for supported firmware again. Do not load firmware intended for a different ECU model.
